Arnis

Arnis, also known as Eskrima or Kali, is a traditional Filipino martial art that specializes in stick fighting, though it also incorporates techniques for empty-handed combat and weapons like knives and swords. Its origins date back centuries, evolving as a means of self-defense for the indigenous people of the Philippines against invaders and colonizers. The art developed through the need for combat skills in everyday life, particularly using sticks or other improvised weapons. Over time, it became a vital part of Filipino culture, passed down through generations and practiced today both as a means of self-defense and as a martial art.

Every Tuesday night from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, the Bamboo Dojo in Vero Beach offers an engaging Arnis class led by Chief Instructor Joe Justado. With a 5th Degree Black Belt in Yoshukai Karate and a Black Belt, GAT Tito, in Arnis, Instructor Justado brings a wealth of expertise and experience to the class.

Sensei Justado trained under the grandmaster and founder of the Garimot Arnis training style, Gat Puno Abundio Baet. This martial arts style has been in his family for four generations and has been utilized in guerilla warfare during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines between 1942 to 1945. The style includes among others striking, grappling, throws and takedowns, empty hands and the utilization of blunt and sharp weapons, sarong and whip.

Students of all levels have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Garimot Arnis training style, focusing on techniques that emphasize speed, precision, and fluidity. The class offers a challenging and supportive environment for practitioners to develop their skills, from basic strikes and footwork to more advanced drills, under the guidance of an accomplished martial artist.
